OURSELVES Irish Music!
Ourselves celebrates the spirit of personally-experienced music springing from a community tradition. They bring an Irish flavor to many of their selections, with whistle, flute, fiddle, concertina or mandolin, but keep a wide range of songs available. You may hear Hank Williams, Appalachian songs, echoes of Tin Pan Alley, Everly Brothers, or Michigander songs. You may sing along to a familiar song or to go away humming a song you’ve never heard before. Tom says that’s as it should be, because “we never aim to be like anyone except “Ourselves”.
Tom Schlichting Tom sang in high school and college, did folk music solo acts, and spent three years singing madrigals with the early music group of the Dallas Symphony Chorus. Moving back to Michigan in 1992, Ourselves formed and he’s enjoyed playing Irish and assorted American music. Besides singing lead and harmony vocals, Tom plays guitar, harmonica, dulcimer and occasional bodhran.
Walt Schlichting went back to Ireland after high school, taking a degree in Archeology at University College Cork. He started playing the tin whistle there. He has since taught himself to play fiddle, mandolin, flute, mandola, concertina and “ukelele bass”. An incorrigible experimentalist, Walt has also built instruments, including our deerskin bodhran.
Lynn Surbrook is a Sanilac County native who joined Ourselves in the summer of 2008. He has a strong affinity for bluegrass and old country music and has previously played with Holy Mountain Boys and Black River Bluegrass Boys. Lynn sings lead on some new songs he brought to the group, and adds guitar leads, mandolin, and banjo backup and a lot of flavor to the sound.

We will be entertained by the Wildrose Pickers, featuring Ron McPhail on guitar, Julianne McCalmon on stand-up bass, and Steve McCalmon on banjo and guitar. Ron and Julianne are the main vocalists, with Steve contributing on a variety of tunes. The group has been playing together informally for many years. They are strongly influenced by bluegrass, Americana, and contemporary genres. Many of their songs will be recognizable to the audience. According to Julianne, “We play this music because we so enjoy it, and hope others will do so as well!”.
Our concert series events are one hour in length, with 15 minutes of food and fellowship, followed by a 45-minute concert. Water and coffee are included, cocktails available for purchase.
